Why you should try half and half in your protein shakes

Protein shakes are all about texture. Because it can vary so much from one brand to the next, trying something different could prove disastrous. If you do eat dairy, keep some half-and-half in your fridge. It can make any drink creamier, more delicious, and more affordable.

Half and half, as coffee drinkers will know, adds creaminess to even small amounts. It works the same way for protein shakes, it seems. You can make your protein shakes thicker and creamier by adding half and half to the mixture. This will not affect the consistency of the beverage. You may find that even water-based shakes taste better when you add a small amount of half and half.

Concentrated ingredients have the apparent advantage of being long-lasting. Ultra-creamy shakes don’t require much half-and-half. It goes much farther than milk, making it an affordable (and more space-conscious!) option. My shakes are made with half a gallon of water, a quarter cup half and half, and 40 grams of protein powder. A cup of cold water is sufficient to make them. I would use milk or a vegan substitute to make my shakes three to four times faster. This leaves me with less space in my fridge and my grocery budget.

No law says you must use the minimum amount of half-and-half every time. It’s probably too rich for most people to use straight up, but upgrading to a “splash” or “a generous pour” can be a good idea, especially if you want to gain weight. Half and half, a protein powder, tends to have fewer calories than other milk options and water. You can increase the calorie count of your protein shakes depending on your training goals and training program. If you do eat dairy, keep some half-and-half in your fridge.
