Why your next classic cocktail should be upside-down
It’s almost the end of January. For some, it may have been a dry month. There are many benefits to abstaining from alcohol, but there is also a significant downside: When you decide to drink again, your tolerance will be much lower.
It’s not all bad; you get more for your money. However, it can have an impact on your social life. It used to be that I could drink four cocktails at a time on a night out with friends without feeling too hungover in the morning. Now, it only takes a few martinis for me to feel sloshed. Instead of cutting out martinis completely, I allow myself some wiggle with an upside-down cocktail.
We have talked about the Manhattan inverted before. You can make this drink quickly by inverting the whiskey and vermouth ratios:
You can also do this with other classic cocktails made of vermouth and spirit. This allows you to extend your drinking time and spend more time with friends without getting drunk by the second round. You could “switch” to soda water or “have a beer.” Drinking cocktails is fun, and I don’t want to miss out (also, beer causes me to sneeze).
You can try a 50/50 if an upside-down cocktail seems too vermouth-heavy for you. The 50/50 Martini is my favorite, especially in the summer, when I can’t wait to enjoy it.
